Premier Owner’s Suites in The Haven (NCL’s exclusive ship within a ship) aboard Norwegian Prima will be 50 percent larger than the most spacious suites of the Breakaway and Breakaway Plus Classes. Norwegian Prima will be the most spacious new cruise ship in the contemporary and premium cruise categories, offering guests approximately 150 to over 1000 more cubic feet per guest compared to comparable ships. In an ambitious six-ship rollout, five additional ships in the same class are planned for launch, one each successive year through 2027. NCL just released details describing some of the enhancements guests can expect in terms of ship design, service and itineraries. Now there is another ship to start getting excited about — Norwegian Viva. The new ship from Norwegian Cruise Line was officially announced today.

The ship will feature more than 43,000 square feet of outdoor space, more than one infinity pool and a cool dining concept called the Indulge Food Hall, which encompasses nearly a dozen restaurants all in one dining experience. From exploring virtual worlds to sipping bubbly at Vibe Beach Club there’s excitement for everyone aboard Norwegian Viva. With 18 ships in the fleet and another eight on order, Norwegian Cruise Line is one of the biggest cruise lines in the world – behind only Carnival and Royal Caribbean in terms of ship count. Following the inaugural sailing and select voyages from Miami, in mid-December the ship repositioned to San Juan, Puerto Rico, the newest ship to homeport in that destination. Additionally, NCL cruises in Europe are already on sale through December 2025 giving guests the chance to plan and book their next summer getaway early. Anyone booking a cruise on those ships could hardly complain of boredom during their voyage, but then the Prima-class ships take the innovations even further and also add in the space for guests to relax and not feel overcrowded. 2 For the comparison, Norwegian Cruise Line compared the total prices for Fly-Cruise-Packages on peak season sailings onboard Norwegian Escape (Italy, France and Spain) to 4-star hotels in Spain and Italy. The comparison accounted for total prices including roundtrip flights from the U.S. to Spain or Italy, transfers at the destination, staterooms (incl. balcony with sea view), all-inclusive board or Free at Sea upgrade as well as service charges/tips. The private spaces impress, too, particularly within The Haven, the ultra-luxe "ship-within-a-ship" area where suites come with 24-hour butler service and access to a private sundeck with an infinity pool, restaurant, and lounge.
She’ll share a lot of similarities with Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva, but she’ll be bigger, and able to hold just over 3,500 guests. In reviews, Norwegian Bliss is the most popular ship in the fleet, just ahead of Norwegian Encore and, surprisingly, the older ship Norwegian Jewel. The newest ship in the fleet, Norwegian Prima, is fourth in the list.

Plus, our Main Dining Rooms offer a menu that changes daily, Chef's Signature Dishes and carefully selected wine recommendations, guaranteeing a different culinary adventure with every visit. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, today unveiled Norwegian Viva, the next ship in its brand-new Prima Class. For Norwegian Prima, the ship will begin its transatlantic voyage from New York on April 27.

Different NCL Ship Classes
Since her maiden voyage in late 2019, Norwegian Encore has demonstrated the very best of the Breakaway and Breakaway-Plus class of ships. She is packed with exciting things to see and do, including her own version of the Galaxy Pavilion and the Encore Speedway. First announced in 2014 at the same time as her sister ship Norwegian Bliss, she was originally intended to be designed for the Chinese market, although the decision was later reversed and she was fitted for a Western market.
Scheduled to debut in 2023, Norwegian Viva is being built at Italian shipyard Fincantieri. The ship will feature some of the same amenities and world-first offerings that can currently be seen on Norwegian Prima, Viva’s Prima-class sister. If you’re looking for the biggest ships with the most staterooms, entertainment spaces and dining, then you might not necessarily want to go for one of Norwegian’s brand-new ships. There are 17 existing ships within the NCL fleet, and 15 of those ships are separated into five classes (a few outliers are considered part of their own, single-ship individual classes). The fleet will increase to 19 once the two new Prima-class vessels have joined. Newer Norwegian Cruise Line ships are generally bigger than older Norwegian ships — sometimes much bigger. As a result, they have room for many more onboard venues and attractions than the line's older vessels. At 143,535 tons, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima are notably smaller than the vessels Norwegian has added to its fleet in recent years. The line's last new ship before the addition of the two vessels, the 2019-built Norwegian Encore, was about 18% bigger than Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima at 169,116 tons. For now, there are only two vessels in the class that you can sail — the recently unveiled Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima.
When Norwegian Escape debuted, it featured the largest water park in the entire NCL fleet. Meet Norwegian Aqua, the latest evolution of our innovative Prima Class. Elevate every part of your vacation with more expansive outdoor space and unobstructed scenic views. Enjoy more first-of-its-kind experiences like the all-new Aqua Slidecoaster. And feel right at home with a greater variety of spacious suites. Let each new experience flow into the next on a ship as inspiring as the ocean itself. This is Norwegian Aqua™.

Norwegian Prima will be 965-feet long and 142,500 gross tons, and can accommodate 3,215 guests at double occupancy. The ship was built in Marghera, Italy by shipbuilder Fincantieri and features striking hull artwork by Italian graffiti artist Manuel Di Rita (known commonly as Peeta). In addition to Lissoni, the architectural team included Rockwell Group, SMC Design, Tillberg Design of Sweden, YSA DESIGN and Miami-based Studio Dado.
She also has departures from Barcelona, Rome and Reykjavik, before crossing the Atlantic to offer sailings from New York, Galveston, Miami and Port Canaveral. In terms of volume, the Norwegian Prima was the smallest ship the cruise line had built since 2007’s Norwegian Gem. Norwegian Prima is the second-most recent addition to the NCL fleet, having been first laid down in 2019 and then launched in 2022. I know that guests are going to love just how much fun they can have on this ship – many already are.
